
LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) created LEED as a rating system for green building.
More specifically, LEED is a system of credit categories, “Prerequisites” and “Credits”, each of which have what LEED calls the “Intent” which identifies the main sustainability goal or benefit. Each also has at least one “Requirement” that specifies the criteria that satisfy the Prerequisite or Credit. All Prerequisites must be achieved. Credits are optional but each one contributes to an overall project score.

Because of the importance and complexity of the LEED certification and rating system, the USGBC has developed a series of Accreditation programs to allow the energy and environmental professional to test their subject and application knowledge.
